Düsseldorf celebrates the best contemporary compositions in 2025!

The prestigious International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) ceremony will take place in Düsseldorf on March 19, 2025. In the “Contemporary Music” category, the jury and the audience honored the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and Marin Alsop, who serves as chief conductor. This honor is bestowed upon the two of them ex aequo with the Berlin Philharmonic, which underlines the importance of this award. The nomination is based on the acclaimed recording of John Adams' works, which were recognized as "most notable" and were also nominated for a Grammy. The CD, from Naxos, contains live recordings from the renowned Vienna Musikverein as well as from the ORF RadioKulturhaus, where the ORF RSO Vienna performs regularly.

The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, also known as RSO Vienna, was founded in 1969 and has established itself as the only radio orchestra in Austria strongly dedicated to contemporary classical music. Marin Alsop, the orchestra's first female principal conductor, has led the ensemble since 2019 and will continue her tenure until the end of the 2025-2026 season. She had already attracted attention as a guest conductor and thus laid the foundation for her appointed position. The importance of the orchestra is particularly highlighted as the Austrian federal government recently assured that financial support for the RSO will be secured until at least 2026, following previous concerns about budget cuts that put the orchestra's existence in question wikipedia.org reported.

Award for excellent music

The award from Marin Alsop and the RSO Vienna reflects the orchestra's commitment to promoting contemporary music and expanding the boundaries of classical music. This was particularly emphasized in the ICMA's assessment, as the recordings of Adams' works are considered novel and groundbreaking for the genre. The jury recognizes not only the artistic achievement but also the innovative strength of the orchestra, which places an important public focus on contemporary music in Austria.
