Alarming figures: Unemployment in Salzburg is rising again!

An alarm sign for the labor market: At the end of February 2025, 546 people in the Ybbstal were registered as unemployed with the AMS Waidhofen. This corresponds to a slight decrease of 2.5 percent compared to the previous year, but given the current situation, the challenges are not diminishing. The unemployment rate was 4.9 percent at the beginning of the year - the lowest in all of Lower Austria, while the national average was 8 percent noen.at reported.

In the city of Salzburg, however, the situation looks bleaker: at the end of February, an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent was recorded, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous year. With 5,435 people looking for work, Salzburg has recorded an increase of 11.2 percent - and young adults under the age of 25 are particularly affected, where unemployment has increased by 13.8 percent. MyDistrict.at reports that the economic services industry has the largest increase in absolute numbers.

Problematic job offers

The situation is made even more complicated by the decline in job vacancies: in February there were only 2,166 immediately available jobs in Salzburg - a drastic decline of 16.4 percent compared to the previous year. The hardest hit areas include accommodation and catering, where many of the newly registered unemployed come from. In addition, there are only 159 immediately available apprenticeships, a decrease of 29 percent. The Salzburg AMS head Franz Huber emphasizes that the problem is that many who are already unemployed have difficulty re-entering the labor market.
