Winter emergency: Homeless people fight for survival in Munich!

in the cold night, in which temperatures sank to minus seven degrees, many people in Munich are facing the food edition of the "Aktion Brücke" association. Among them is a woman around 50, who once worked as a top stylist and is now anonymous for help. The food and clothing output takes place every Sunday at the Munich Ostbahnhof and not only offers warm meals, but also hygiene items and sleeping bags.

The need for support is great. Six volunteers work at the issue, and Patrick Schianchi, a committed helper, emphasizes that everyone receives a meal, but the sleeping bags are quickly out of stock. One of the visitors to the issue is BASTI, who has been living on the street for years, as well as Tom, who uses the offers despite his apartment and citizens' allowance payments due to debt.

Current homelessness number

The situation for homeless people in Munich is reflected in the current figures: According to the social department, living in the city 10,458 acute homeless people, 342 without shelter. In Nuremberg there are 2,500 homeless people, around 190 of whom are also without a shelter. The number of homeless is increasing in both cities, which Anja Sauer, the founder of the "Aktion Brücke", finds it as worrying. It attributes this development to high rental prices, increased energy costs and food prices.

In the entire Free State of Bavaria, the authorities report around 39,000 people who live without their own apartment. "Action Bridge" has greatly enlarged since 2020, when Anja Sauer and a friend started with only 30 rolls and two pots of coffee. The association currently looks after up to 1,200 people per weekend, which corresponds to an increase of 40 percent since 2023. In Nuremberg, the emergency sleeping points were also expanded to 250 places and special accommodations for women and trans people were set up. In the meantime, 120 volunteers are involved in "Aktion Brücke" to support logistics, food donations and authorities.
