Social work in the crisis: Human rights endangered by new politics!
The Austrian Society for Social Work (OGSA) and OBDS, the professional association for social workers, commented concerns about the current government negotiations between the FPÖ and the ÖVP. In a joint explanation, they emphasize that the beating stones of the negotiations, sometimes authoritarian approaches to control social issues, question the basic principle of universal human rights fundamentally. This not only endangers the rights of particularly vulnerable groups, but also contradicts the values of the Austrian constitution, such as "https://www.ots.at/presseaus-sung/ots_20250205_ots0006/social-wahr-bild-bildung-einer-fpoev- Federal Government"> ots.at reports.
On the international stage, the hollowing out of human rights is becoming increasingly clear. According to a conference on social work and human rights, which addressed the massive disregard of universal rights, numerous companies suffer from the consequences of conflicts and the inequality between rich and poor. Here, social professions are particularly obliged to protect these rights and actively to implement their implementation. The event emphasizes that the promotion of social participation and the protection of human rights are contemporary challenges for social work. These topics were also intensively discussed at the conference, where specialists and scientists developed solutions for the daily vulnerability of many people, such as iu.de
the first responsibility
social work is increasingly understood as a human rights profession that not only relies on legal provisions, but also critically tested in practice. Especially in the area of child protection and the support of migrants, it is crucial to translate these rights into concrete measures. The current political discussions and their potential consequences require increased attention to the rights of these groups in order to counteract a further social division. It is clear that social work as a link between theory and practice must act and fight for the equality of all people.
