Solidarity with the queer community: protest in front of the Hungarian message!
Bankgasse 5, 1010 Wien, Österreich - Hungary is once again the focus of critical voices from the European Union, since the government under Viktor Orbán is planning a factual ban on the Budapest Pride Parade. David Stögmüller, the LGBTIQ+spokesman for the Greens, describes this as "unacceptable attack on the human and fundamental rights of the queer community". Stögmüller calls on the EU to act immediately and to initiate a violation procedure in order to counter the pressure on the queer community in Hungary. The planned draft law aims to further marginalize non-heteronormative ways of life. In response to this situation, the Greens, together with other queer organizations, have announced a spontaneous demonstration for Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in front of the Hungarian embassy in Vienna to show solidarity with the Hungarian LGBTIQ+community. "We don't look away when diversity is being combated," emphasize Stögmüller and his fellow campaigners.
Legal state violations and international lawsuits
The EU Commission is planning to bring Hungary back to the European Court of Justice. This is done due to alleged violations of European law, which are anchored in the new national law to "defend sovereignty". According to the EU, this affects basic principles of democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of association. The law, which was adopted in December, also leads to an expansion of the existing ban on party financing from abroad to clubs and organizations. Critics fear that the new "Office for Sovereign Protection" has a considerable scope for discretion that could significantly restrict the work of NGOs and journalists. The green deputy Daniel Freis compares the law with the tactics of the government of Vladimir Putin and warns of his devastating effects on civil society in Hungary. If the lawsuit is successful, Hungary threatens sensitive fines, which, if the judgment, would follow the judgment, could increase, as has already happened through previous violations that led to a penalty of 200 million euros.
