Ferdinand Hebra: Pioneer of dermatology celebrated in Josephinum!
A relevant event in the world of medicine is imminent: On March 19, 2025, the new special exhibition in the Josephinum in Vienna opens its doors. This exhibition is devoted to the impressive work of Ferdinand von Hebra, a pioneer of dermatology, and its important "Atlas of skin diseases", which was created between 1856 and 1876. This work is considered one of the central table works and has revolutionized the basics of modern dermatology by not only considering the skin as an outer shell, but as an independent organ with specific diseases, the article by APA ots is explained.
As part of the exhibition, not only will the original illustrations from Hebras Atlas be seen, but also fascinating plastic wax prints, so -called moulages, which impressively present the medical knowledge of its time. Christiane Druml, director of the Josephinum, underlines the importance of these historical representations for today's medicine and emphasizes that many diseases still exist, but their symptoms have often become invisible by modern therapies. This shows how medicine has developed over the years, while at the same time recognizing the achievements of Hebra's work, as can be read in the report by josephinum.ac.at.
art meets medicine
In addition, the exhibition of contemporary art is accompanied, which, by the artist Markus Schinwald, brings an innovative perspective on the topics of the skin and its importance. This combination of historical medicine and modern art creates a unique experience for visitors. The organizers expect this exhibition not only attract doctors, but also art lovers and interested parties who want to learn more about the connection between art and science.
The exhibition "Haut. Ferdinand Hebra and his atlas of skin diseases" can be seen in the Josephinum from March 19 to October 4, 2025. Accompanying the opening, a press release will take place on March 18, to which media representatives are invited to get the insights into Hebra's revolutionary work and its effects on dermatology.
