Vigo becomes the Christmas capital: Lichtermeer provides protests!
The Spanish city of Vigo is once again transformed into a glittering Christmas world that attracts tourists from all over the world. Already in November the impressive Christmas lights, consisting of over 11.5 million LED lights, was installed. This spectacular staging runs over 450 streets, starting in the outdoor district to the center, and culminates in a 50 -meter -high Christmas tree, the majestic presence of which is called the "largest in the world". According to Mayor Abel Caballero, who is also looking for competition with New York this season, around six million people visited the light spectacle in 2023. Caballero is convinced: "All of Spain is waiting", as Vol.at reported.
The celebrations in Vigo are of great importance for the entire region, but not all residents are enthusiastic. Above all, the high costs of 2.2 million euros for Christmas lights encounter resistance because they exceed the annual budget for schools. In addition, the installation of the lights led to roadblocks and considerable traffic disruptions, which is why the public transport companies protest. Many residents say that the world of lights growing year after year affects their quality of life. The Christmas season is increasingly perceived as an unbearable “Christmas madness”, so numerous citizens and resident associations report that draw attention to the existing problems and, among other things, want to hang white sheets as a sign of protest from their balconies, as from an article in merkur.de .
While the festive light show transforms the city into a tourist destination, residents report on constant noise and light nuisance, further challenges in everyday life and a disorder of local business life. Some residents complain about the concept that almost turns Christmas into a themed park and imposed on the residents of how they have to experience this time. Despite the increasing protests, Caballero is unimpressed and plans to further expand the Christmas splendor and the event. The competition with cities like New York is still his motto: "The World’s Best Christmas is in Vigo, Spain" - an approach that should provide shared opinions in the tranquil port city.
