THAAD: US missile system and 100 soldiers sent to Israel

The THAAD defense system is one of the US military's most powerful anti-missile weapons. It is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at a range of 150 to 200 kilometers (93 to 124 miles) and has a near-perfect success rate in tests.

What is THAAD?

THAAD, short for Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, uses a combination of advanced radar systems and interceptor missiles. It is the only U.S. missile defense system capable of engaging and destroying short-, medium- and intercontinental ballistic missiles both inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere during their final phase of flight - approach to the target.

Technology and functionality

The THAAD interceptor missiles are kinetic, meaning they neutralize incoming targets by collision rather than exploding near the incoming warhead. This precision makes the system one of the most effective defenses against missile attacks.

Willingness and commitment

According to a Congressional Research Service report, the US military has seven THAAD batteries. Each battery consists of six vehicle-mounted starters, each equipped with eight interceptor missiles. In addition, each battery includes a powerful radar system as well as fire control and communications components.

THAAD in Israel

One of these valuable batteries is currently sent to Israel, to bolster its already formidable incoming missile defense capabilities. This comes following Iran's unprecedented attacks on Israel on April 13 and again on October 1, the Pentagon reported. US troops are required on site to support the operation.

US troops in action

The U.S. Army is expected to send about 100 soldiers to Israel to operate the battery. Iran has told the US it will respond to any new attack by Israel. A Tehran informant reported this information to CNN on Saturday.
