Pioneers of mountain photography: exhibition in the Lumen Museum Bruneck!

March 8, the international women's day, brought an exciting news from the world of mountain photography: Tap-Süd has created a remarkable exhibition that is devoted to the pioneers who conquered their place at a time when photography and alpinism was dominated by men. In the second half of the 19th century, only a few self -confident women dared to penetrate these male -dominated fields. One of the most famous figures was Franziska Möllinger from Trier, born in 1817, who created Daguerreotypes of the Bernese Oberland in 1836. They sold these pictures as lithographs and laid the foundation for many other photographers.

The exhibition in the Lumen Museum in Bruneck, which will be shown from March 16 to April 21, 2025, focuses on four outstanding women: Elizabeth Main, who is considered the "founder" of Winteralpinism, is particularly emphasized. Gertrude Bell, Annie Smith Peck and Una May Cameron are also presented in the exhibition. These women were not only alpins, but also travel writers and women's rights activists who set standards with their works. In addition, the exhibition is available online at www.tiroler-photoarchiv.eu, as the dolomitenstadt reported.

The difficulty for women to find recognition in these areas was enormous. Many of them had to work under pseudonyms, often under the name of their husbands, and received little attention. Martha Attinger, Hanni Bernhard and Rose Marie Schudel-Ingold also contributed to the photographic documentary at this time, but were mainly busy with their men's laboratories. Even if the names remained without great recognition, their influence on mountain photography and the alpinism movement was profound, such as East Tyrol today.

The exhibition not only offers a look back at the neglect of these important women, but also pays them due respect. It is expected that visitors will receive a deep insight into the life and work of these extraordinary women through old photographs and stories that dared to cross the borders of their time.
