At least 15 deaths and over 100 missing by landslide in Uganda
At least 15 people have died and 113 more are missing after landslide houses in six villages in the eastern Uganda, as the police announced.

A total of 15 injured people were saved and recorded in the Buluganya health center. The Ugandian Rotkreuzgesellschaft reported on Thursday that 13 corpses were already recovered after 40 houses were affected by the landslide. The rescue work is still in progress.

Local media report that the authorities fear that the number of death could increase to up to 30. The landslide occurred after heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening in the mountainous district of Bulambuli, which is about 280 kilometers east of the capital Kampala. Handels are common in this region.

A journalist informed the AP news agency that local officials had announced that an excavator could be used to support the rescue efforts. However, the streets were covered with mud and it rained.

The affected area comprises around 50 ACRES (20 hectares), on which residential buildings and agricultural areas extend. On social media, photos and videos were shared by people looking for victims in the mud. Some houses were completely covered with mud, while in others only the roof could still be seen.

The newspaper Daily Monitor reported that most of the corpses recovered so far are children. The Prime Minister's office published a disaster warning on Wednesday, in which it was said that the heavy rains had cut important roads across the country.

Two rescue boats capsized on Wednesday during a rescue operation on the Nil River, where the Pakwach bridge was flooded. The situation remains critical, while the rescue workers continue to try to find the missing person and to help the families concerned.
