Mexican President calls Google to withdraw Gulf names
Mexico City-President Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, sent a letter to Google in which she criticizes the decision of the technology giant to meet the command of US President Donald Trump to change the name of the Golf of Mexico in Golf from America
The appeal to sovereignty
President Sheinbaum explained to the journalist on Thursday: "In Mexico, where are we completely confident? In the area that was defined on 12 nautical miles from the coast, and this applies to all countries worldwide." She further emphasized: "If a country wants to change the name for something in the sea, this would only apply up to 12 nautical miles. It cannot apply to the rest, in this case for the Gulf of Mexico. We have explained this in detail."
The comparison of the names
In terms of an earlier proposal she had made to rename the USA, Sheinbaum added: "Ultimately, we asked that if someone is looking for 'America Mexicana' in the search engine field, the card we have previously presented is displayed." This card, which comes from 1607, described parts of North America as "Mexican America" and was shown during a press conference at the beginning of this month.
changes in Google Maps
On Monday, Google announced that Google Maps users in the USA would see the water name Gulf of Mexico renamed America. Google explained that this step was in accordance with its practice to use name changes when they have been updated by official government sources. Users in Mexico will continue to see the "Gulf of Mexico" on Google Maps. The rest of the world will see both names.

In addition, Google will also change the name of Mount McKinley, the highest summit in the country. Former President Barack Obama renamed Denali in 2015 to honor the local population of the region. Both changes come from an executive, which Trump signed shortly after his inauguration, with the statement that the changes "honor the American size".

"It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary legacy of our nation and ensure that future generations of American citizens are celebrating the legacy of our American heroes," says the executive arrangement.
