India and Pakistan agree on ceasefire – will it last?

On Saturday, India and Pakistan surprisingly agreed to an immediate ceasefire, halting the worst fighting in decades between the two nuclear powers. This happened just as their mutual attacks seemed to be getting out of hand.

US President Trump announces ceasefire

US President Donald Trump was the first to announce the ceasefire and claim credit for it. India and Pakistan, on the other hand, report contradictory reports about the extent of US participation in the agreement.

Reports of violations

Reports of violations from both sides emerged just hours after the announcement. It remains to be seen whether this ceasefire will last.

How did the ceasefire come about?

At 8 a.m. ET, around 4 p.m. in India and Pakistan, Trump announced the ceasefire in a post on Truth Social. He stated: "After a long night of talks brokered by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE Ceasefire." Trump congratulated the leaders of both countries for “using common sense and great intelligence.”

Statements from the US State Department

Shortly thereafter, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that India and Pakistan had not only agreed to a ceasefire but also to begin "talks on a wide range of issues at a neutral location." He said the ceasefire came after he and Vice President JD Vance spoke with senior officials from both countries over the past two days.
