Rubio warns: Syria threatens new civil war after Assad's fall!
The civil war in Syria continued to have devastating effects on the country despite the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio now warns of a new civil war that could possibly assume "monumental proportions". Rubio expressed that the transitional government under the new President Ahmed al-Shaara "may only be removed from a possible collapse" oe24 .
The warnings come at a critical time, as armed attacks increase on the Alawi -Minister and the situation in Syria remains unstable. The new head of state Al-Shaara, formerly known as Abu Muhammad Al-Dschulani, leads the Islamist militia HTS and has tried to convey a more moderate picture after the fall of the Assad regime. US President Donald Trump recently praised him as a "fighter" and promised the abolition of economic sanctions to promote reconstruction.
new challenges for the transitional government
The transitional government, which came to power after the falling uprising against Assad rule, has to deal with considerable challenges. Around 90 % of the population live in poverty, and the economy has decreased to a third of the pre -war level. 70 % are dependent on humanitarian aid, and the return of refugees could further deteriorate the situation reports BPB .
The military success of the HTS was based on a combination of clever strategy and the weakness of the Assad regime. This led to the creation of a transitional government that is committed to clear goals: the introduction of a new constitution and elections within the next three years. A national conference has also spoken out for the inclusion of all ethnic and religious groups.
Türkiye and Kurdish forces
At the same time, the situation is heading for the Kurdish forces in Syria. Turkey has threatened with military actions if the YPG units should not meet their retreat claims. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that international fighters immediately have to withdraw from Syria. Turkey sees the YPG as an offshoot of the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization reports 20min.ch .
The YPG played a crucial role in the fight against the Islamic state and is supported by the United States. The SDF, to which the YPG belongs, controls large parts of Northeast Syria and has established autonomous administration. It is unclear how the integration of Kurdish forces will run into the new Syrian army, which could lead to further tensions.
In view of the complex geopolitical constellation in the Middle East, the role of the United States and Turkey remains uncertain in the future Syrian order. The international community fears that the ongoing conflicts and uncertainties around the transitional government could endanger the stability in the region.Details | |
