Authentication testing for fine wines: Blockchain is revolutionizing the industry!
On May 28, 2025, Identiv, Inc. will present a Wine Authentication Webinar highlighting unique anti-counterfeit technology. Loud OTS Identiv is working with ZATAP and Genuine-Analytics on an NFC-based smart packaging solution. This initiative aims to revolutionize wine bottle authentication as it is estimated that up to 20% of wine bottles worldwide are counterfeit.
The innovative solution is based on a combination of wireless IoT, digital certificates and blockchain technology to verify the authenticity of bottles and contents. An approach that combines NFC technology, non-invasive content verification and a blockchain-based digital identity aims to ensure seamless and reliable authenticity verification for the wine industry.
Technology and collaboration
As the information shows, the solution includes Identiv NFC inlays with NTAG® 424 DNA TagTamper security-certified chips. Content analysis is carried out by Genuine-Analytics, which uses a microscopic hole for content verification. This analysis is validated by the winePROOF database. ZATAP has also developed a mobile interface to communicate with the blockchain in real time and exchange data.
An example of the effectiveness of this solution occurred at a Swiss wine auction in 2024, when some bottles of rare vintages that reached over 20,000 CHF were successfully checked for authenticity. A counterfeit bottle was also identified, which underlines the potential of this technology.
