Vienna becomes a basketball hotspot: 3x3 action at Heumarkt!

Vienna will once again become the venue for urban basketball in June 2025 when the “3×3 Vienna” event takes place at Heumarkt. From June 12th to 15th, the best players will compete in the dynamic and intense sport, recognized as an official discipline since the 2021 Olympic Games. The highlights of the event include the 3×3 WORLD TOUR with the best men’s teams, the 3×3 WOMEN’S SERIES for the top women’s teams as well as the 3×3 WHEELCHAIR MASTERS and the 3×3 U23 NATIONS LEAGUE, which puts young talent in the spotlight. Daily program items are rounded off with live DJs, dance groups and street food, making the event a celebration for sports fans and the entire community.

The success story of 3×3 basketball in Vienna is impressive. The city recently signed a three-year contract until 2027 to sustainably promote this exciting variant of basketball. Sports City Councilor Peter Hacker highlights the positive experiences at Heumarkt and emphasizes the efforts to further expand Vienna as a sports metropolis. The city is planning investments in infrastructure and is particularly committed to the development of youth and para sports. In the past two years, between 60,000 and 70,000 visitors have followed the previous events.

3×3 basketball as an integral part of the city

The concept of 3×3 basketball is simple but exciting: games last a maximum of ten minutes, with an aggressive style of play and an attack time of just 12 seconds. These format elements ensure fast-paced and exciting encounters that captivate both players and viewers. In Vienna, the sport has become established both in public spaces and in modern sports and fun halls, which further increases its popularity.

The city has already had significant success in international basketball events, including the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 European Championship. This not only strengthens the international perception of Vienna as a basketball destination, but also underlines the commitment to promoting 3×3 basketball at the highest level.

Dominik Gschiegl, Managing Director of 3×3 Event GmbH, is positive about the cooperation with the city and the potential that these events offer for the local community. Anatol Richter from Sport Wien also emphasizes the importance of top-class formats in order to consolidate Vienna's position as the center of 3×3 basketball.
