VSV overruns FTC Budapest: The ice hockey league's exciting start to the season!
The new season of the win2day ICE Hockey League began on September 12, 2025 with an exciting opening game. The VSV played away against league newcomers FTC Budapest and won 4-2. This encounter not only marked the first matchday, but also FTC Budapest's first appearance in the league.
After just a few seconds, VSV made its ambitions clear. Hutchison scored the first goal for the Budapest team in the 2nd minute. But FTC Budapest didn't stay behind for long. Wallenta made it 2-0 in the 5th minute, which filled the players and fans in their stadium with enthusiasm. The joy was short-lived, however, as Kestila scored the first goal in the club's history for FTC Budapest in the 8th minute, reducing the score to 1-2.
Tense first half
Uschan gave VSV a 3-1 lead in the 14th minute. However, after the turbulent initial phase, the game noticeably flattened out. Chances to score remained rare and both teams found it difficult to build up. As the game progressed, Scherbak scored another goal for VSV in the 50th minute, while Bengtsson scored a power play goal for Budapest in the 58th minute. The final score of 4:2 for VSV confirmed their strong performance in the first game of the season.
Overview of the seasonal structure
The regular season of the win2day ICE Hockey League will be held in two round robins. Each of the 13 teams plays a total of 48 games, and the entire season runs until the end of February. The teams that finish in places one to six after this phase will advance directly to the quarterfinals. Places seven to ten, on the other hand, have to compete in the “best-of-3” pre-playoffs in order to secure a place in the round of the last eight teams.
For the main round, this means: Each team plays against the others four times, with a total of 312 games being played. The playoffs, held in a best-of-7 format, then bring the excitement of elimination games, where every win or loss decision counts. A tie after regulation time results in an endless sudden death overtime in the elimination games.
The ice hockey league system in Germany, organized by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB), includes several leagues. The highest league is the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), followed by the DEL2 and two upper leagues. The DEL was founded in 1994 and plays a central role in German ice hockey, as do the nationwide amateur leagues among the regional associations.
With the start of the new season, the ICE Hockey League promises exciting, unpredictable encounters that will captivate both fans and players. The teams are ready to compete and fight for the coveted titles.
