Trump praises the overthrow of Assad's regime as an "unfriendly takeover" by Turkey!
In an explosive appearance, US President-elect Donald Trump has described the overthrow of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad as an “unfriendly takeover” by Turkey! The bold statement was made during a press conference at his luxurious Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, just weeks before he returns to the White House on January 20, 2024.
Trump, who does not mince his words, praised Turkey for its strategic decisions in the Syria conflict. “I think Turkey is very smart... They carried out an unfriendly takeover without many lives being lost,” Trump said, referring to the Dec. 8 overthrow of the longtime Syrian leader. “Assad was a butcher, what he did to children is unimaginable!”
The uprising and Erdogan's role
Assad's fall came after a surprise offensive by rebels led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has long opposed Assad's rule and supported the Syrian National Army (SNA), which is active in northwest Syria. Trump has stressed in the past that this conflict is “not our fight,” but his recent comments show clear support for Turkish ambitions.
The situation in Syria remains tense. Trump said “nobody knows” what the future holds for the war-torn country, which has been mired in chaos since 2011. “I think Turkey will be the key,” he added, pointing to Ankara’s central role in the region.
Trump on the Middle East and more
But that wasn't everything! Trump also spoke about his conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I had a very good conversation,” he said, emphasizing that they discussed the release of hostages in Gaza. "I warned that if these hostages don't come home by a certain date, all hell will break loose!"
Trump remained vague about the Ukraine conflict when asked if he had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "We have to stop it. It's a slaughter," he shouted, describing the destruction in the affected cities as "rubble."
And as the world focuses on geopolitical tensions, Trump also addressed the looming federal ban on the popular social media platform TikTok. “We will take a look at it,” he said, admitting that the platform helped him win the election.
On the domestic front, Trump expressed concerns about numerous drone sightings in the eastern United States and called for more transparency from the government. “The government knows what is happening,” he stressed, “but for some reason they don’t want to comment.”
Amid all this political turmoil, Trump also defended his controversial choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and asserted that access to vaccines like the one against polio is not at risk. “That won’t happen,” he assured.
