Witch hunt in Burundi: brutal attacks shock the world!

In Burundi, a brutal incident sparked by rumors of witchcraft has sparked global horror. Two victims were burned alive and another was beaten to death with a stick. Three other people survived with serious injuries, with one of the victims remaining in hospital. The incident took place on Gasarara Hill, near the economic hub of Bujumbura, and was carried out by members of the Imbonerakure, the youth wing of the ruling party. This paramilitary militia has been heavily criticized by the United Nations and human rights organizations as it is accused of serious crimes such as torture and murder.

The violent attacks came after rumors emerged of unexplained deaths, including a child and a teacher. Despite a majority Christian population, traditional belief systems remain widespread in Burundi. Bujumbura Governor Desire Nsengiyumva called the lynching "unacceptable" while 16 suspects, including members of the Imbonerakure, were arrested. In 2024, an ex-prime minister was sentenced to life in prison for alleged witchcraft on similar charges.

Witch hunting in the context of superstition and violence

The incident has caused a stir not only in Burundi but around the world and sheds light on the ongoing violence in the country. According to Amnesty International reports, journalists and critics of the authoritarian regime are continually battling arbitrary arrests, physical attacks and other forms of repression. In the past, human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch have repeatedly documented serious human rights violations by the Imbonerakure.

Discrimination against certain population groups, such as LGBTI individuals and unmarried women, is also an ongoing problem in Burundi. In addition, over 86,000 people have been displaced within the country due to extreme weather events, while many Burundians are living as refugees in neighboring countries.

Increase in repression

As part of the political repression, the government continued to exert influence over opposition parties. Opposition figures are regularly arrested and there are reports of attempted intimidation of journalists and attacks on press freedom. A newly introduced electoral code has increased requirements for candidates, adding strain to the political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.

The Imbonerakure shootings and the deteriorating situation in Burundi highlight the challenges facing the population. While international organizations try to put pressure on the Burundian government, the country's future remains uncertain. The brutal incidents of this witch hunt are further evidence of the deep-rooted problems plaguing the country.
