General of the Assad regime captured in Syria – protests escalate!
In Syria, the new interim government has dealt a significant blow against the supporters of former ruler Bashar al-Assad. According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, security forces arrested General Mohammed Kanjo Hassan, who is said to be responsible for numerous death sentences in the notorious Saidnaya prison. The general and 20 of his companions were captured in the town of Chirbet al-Maasa, an area in the embattled Tartus province that is considered a stronghold of Assad supporters. This arrest initially failed after three members of the former government and 14 security forces were killed in fighting, the Sana news agency reported.
The upheaval in Syria is not only characterized by military actions. A video showing the desecration of an Alawite shrine in Aleppo has sparked nationwide protests oe24 reported. The Alawites, which include the Assad family, appear to be coming under increasing pressure. Armed clashes between security forces and Assad supporters have also taken place near Homs in recent days. Several supporters of the former regime and security forces were killed. However, it remains unclear exactly how many died in these heavy fighting.
