Police received a tip about the dog around 6 p.m. The animal's owner informed the officers that an acquaintance of hers was traveling with the dog. She had had no contact with the man since late afternoon. While searching for the 33-year-old, the emergency services also discovered his vehicle near the cemetery in Hegnach.

An extensive search operation was then started in the Langwiesen area above the Rems. These efforts resulted in the man being found lifeless around 10:30 p.m., found near a fallen tree. An emergency doctor only diagnosed the 33-year-old as dead. The criminal police have started an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the death.
