Deadly fall series in the Leogang bike park: two accidents within 48 hours!

On June 26, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in the Bike Park at Leoganganger Asitz in Salzburg, which marked the second fatal accident within just two days. A 33-year-old man from Latvia had an accident after making a jump on a downhill course and crashing it upside down into the run. Witnesses reported that the biker may have been on the road with too high a journey, which led to the serious fall. Although the man was provided with very good protective equipment, he was flown to the Tauernklinikum with a rescue helicopter immediately after the accident, where he died shortly after arrival. The police found no evidence of external debt in their first examination.

The deadly fall occurred only one day after a 54-year-old Swiss had been fatal in the same bike park. This had also fallen on a downhill trail for a ramp and had opened his head on the floor. In both cases, the rescue measures were initiated immediately, but it was not possible for the emergency doctors to help the accident. Since the incidents, the Leogang mountain railways have published security recommendations on their homepage to increase the security of the bikers.

increasing number of accidents in mountain biking

The two tragic accidents in Leogang reflect a worrying trend. According to the Austrian and Bavarian Board of Trustees for Alpine Security, the number of mountain bike accidents in Austria is steadily increasing. In the past ten years, the number of accidents in leisure cycling in Austria has even tripled, especially in Tyrol, where the increase is even more pronounced. This increase correlates with the increasing number of recreational athletes and the increasing popularity of e-mountain bikes, which results in greater willingness to take risks and the associated accidents.

statistics show that a total of 12 deaths were recorded in mountain biking in a period of one year, from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022. The main cause of these accidents was often due to falls - 50 percent of the deaths resulted from such falls. Especially when driving downhill, there are often accidents, with 81 percent of the incidents happening during the departure.

  • causes of the accident:
    • 50% falls
    • 42% cardiovascular disorders
    • 8% other causes
  • types of injury:
    • shoulder and collarbone area (22%)
    • head injuries (13%)

In order to counteract worrying development, an online campaign is launched that aims to raise awareness of accident avoidance. The campaign encourages bikers to prepare and plan to increase the security of mountain biking.

In view of the tragic incidents in Leogang and the general increase in the number of accidents in mountain biking, it is essential that bikers use the right security technology and are aware of the risks. This is the only way to maintain the joy of sport without tragic incidents. Further information on security in mountain biking and specific recommendations can be found on the HomePages of the Leoganger Bergbahnen and the Austrian and Bavarian Board of Trustees for Alpine Security.
