Not only incidents in news from Salzburg concern the minds. Opinions about Hungary in the neighborhood and beyond are also part of a current debate. According to the Hungarian Barometer 2025 of the Nézőpont Institute, Slovaks, Romanians and Serbs have a positive view of Hungary, while Austrians, Croats and Slovenes are rather critical. This opinion is reflected in the latest surveys that were carried out in January 2025. It is surprising that almost 62 % of Hungary now have a positive opinion about the Slovaks, which is a change in perception. Particular attention is also paid to the Hungarian relationship with Romania: with 50 % positive approval among the Hungary, there is a continuous increase that has developed over the years, reports Hungary.hu.
political dynamics and neighborhood issues
In these turbulent political times, characterized by the Russian-Ukrainian War, the perception of neighboring countries is significantly influenced by political events. Hungary's government has initiated an active peace mission, which may strengthen the positive opinion in the region. The increase in positive views of Serbia, which is occupied by 48 % among the Hungarians, as well as the close cooperation between the two countries in important areas such as migration management and energy security is remarkable. The cooperation aims to deal with challenges in the Balkans together, while strategic projects such as the Budapest-Belgrade railway line are promoted, reports the Nézőpont Institute.
