Age-risky: 85-year-old rides his electric vehicle as a wrong-way driver on the A8!

A bizarre incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon on the Innkreis motorway (A8) near Wels when an 85-year-old from Pichl accidentally drove his electric senior car against the direction of travel. Witnesses alerted the police after several emergency calls were received reporting a wrong-way driver. The senior, who only reached a speed of 10 km/h, had apparently previously asked for directions to Pichl and then misdirected himself onto the motorway at the Wels-Wirtschaftspark exit ORF reported.

Dangerous driving on the highway

With his vehicle, which looks like an electric wheelchair with moped tires, the pensioner drove in the fast lane right next to the guardrails. Fortunately, ASFINAG employees who were felling trees at a construction site noticed the unusual sight and were able to stop him on the hard shoulder before a possible accident. The alerted police then took the man into care and brought him home safely while the senior mobile home was towed away.

The 85-year-old now has to expect several charges after being held responsible for his dangerous wrong-way driving crown. The incident not only shows the challenges in road traffic, but also sheds light on the dangers that can arise from misunderstandings and misdirection.
