Frankfurt: Dorint Hotel becomes the new refuge for families!
The former splendor of the Dorint Hotel in Frankfurt will soon serve a new purpose: to accommodate refugee families. According to reports, the city and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) plan to convert the building by the end of the year to create space for around 320 people. This transformation primarily affects refugee families from countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea who already live in the Main metropolis. The hotel's room structure provides a solid basis for the conversion, so that the effort of a completely new furnishing concept is not required.
Challenges in integration
While the house itself is intended to provide a new home in the future, challenges are already arising with integration, especially when it comes to the question of sufficient school and kindergarten places in Niederrad. Residents expressed concern about the already overcrowded schools, with the Froebel School having over 600 students, far exceeding its intended capacity of 350. The city also continues to cite the already scarce resources of doctors and educators as a problem. However, efforts are being made to find solutions to get the situation under control, as Katrin Wenzel, head of the accommodation management department, said. emphasized to www.fnp.de.
The future accommodation will take into account not only practical but also safety aspects. The ASB, which already looks after several refugee facilities in Frankfurt, will also expand its management here. In addition to a 24-hour reception service, an additional security service will ensure the safety of residents. These measures are also intended to appeal to the local population, who are always openly invited to communicate if they have any questions or problems, explained Thomas Müller-Witte, managing director of ASB Frankfurt.
Community and participation
The transformation of the Dorint Hotel not only entails structural changes, but also requires social commitment. Many residents of Niederrad signal their willingness to support the refugee families. The ASB is supported by volunteers who are willing to take action in the form of German courses or as personal contacts. “How can we tackle it?” many people asked themselves, in order to make it easier for the new neighbors to settle in and integrate.
However, one downside remains: the planned demolition of the small hotel swimming pool, which was previously used by a private swimming school. Safety concerns and financial hurdles made it impossible to continue operations. Despite these restrictions, the city and those entrusted with the renovation are working to build a bridge of help in Frankfurt for those who need it most.
