Viennese lines celebrate gold for e-competence center in Siebenhirten!

On June 5, 2025, it was announced that the Viennese lines for their e-competence center in Siebenhirten were awarded the Austrian Administrative Prize of the Federal Chancellery. This honor in the category "Ecological Sustainability, Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection" is a sign of the advanced measures taken in the modernized infrastructure. The e-competence center was built on a former bus parking space and is characterized by a sustainable construction. The buildings are partly built in wooden construction and have green roofs and side walls. A photovoltaic system on the roof generates electricity for the company buildings and the loading of the e-buses. Excess electricity is led into the Viennese line network, while electricity from the public network is used for feed-in at night.

Sustainable technologies in focus

A special feature of the e-competence center is the use of the waste heat of the chargers, which serves to heat the lounge and workshops. This innovative solution is recognized by the award with the climate-active standard in gold, the highest quality sign for sustainable buildings in Austria. According to Wiener Linien The promotion of e-bus purchase and the establishment of quick charging stations by EU funds is carried out as part of the EBIN program of the Ministry of Climate Protection.

The award is also an expression of a comprehensive change in the area of sustainable mobility and building technology, which is supported by the new EU building directive (EU/2024/1275). This guideline, which came into force in May 2024, sets requirements for the renovation of existing buildings and the exit from fossil heating systems.
