Viennese Christmas markets: Popularity and sales rise in Advent time

The anticipation of Christmas is noticeable in Vienna: A survey by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce shows that over 71 percent of Viennese plan to visit one of the many Christmas markets at least once. These markets, which offer a variety of Christmas stands, are an integral part of the Vienna Advent tradition and do not only attract local visitors, but also tourists from a distance every year.

With a total of 14 Christkindlmarkt and around 800 stands, the capital turns into a real Christmas paradise every year. In the popular locations such as Rathausplatz, Spittelberg and Schönbrunn Castle, the Viennese are particularly impressed by the festive atmosphere, which is accompanied with lights, decorative stands and lively music. According to the survey results, every Viennese plans an average of four visits during this year's Advent.

economic importance of the markets

The Christmas markets are not only a place of enjoyment and conviviality, but also an important economic factor for the city. "Christmas markets have a long tradition and enjoy increasing popularity," explains Margarete Gumprecht, chairwoman of the trade division in the WKW. The planned visits alone by Viennese add up to around 4.5 million, and the markets also attract numerous international guests who want to experience the city's special flair.

The willingness to spend the visitors should be emphasized. On average, visitors spend around 30 euros per market visit - a gratifying increase compared to the 22 euros in 2019. This development could ensure an estimated total sales of approx. 140 million euros, whereby the expenditure of tourists in this invoice has not yet been taken into account.

The atmospheric atmosphere is the main reason for the popularity of the markets: more than half of the respondents (57 percent) indicate that the special ambience is decisive for them. In addition, 45 percent enjoy the sociable get -together with friends and 43 percent the enjoyment of punch and mulled wine.

Vienna offers a variety of options, but some markets stand out. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce has highlighted the top 5 most popular Christmas markets:
