Young driver without a license: wild chase in Vienna-Meidling
A shocking incident occurred last Wednesday in Vienna-Meidling when an 18-year-old man, under the influence of drugs and without a driver's license, led a dangerous chase with the police. The incident began when police officers noticed a car crossing an intersection with a yellow light and attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver stepped on the accelerator and fled towards Breitenfurter Straße.
The driver's inappropriate reaction led to a reckless drive; He drove at excessive speeds and ignored numerous red lights. During the escape, it was discovered that the vehicle's license plates had been reported stolen. Both uninvolved cars and pedestrians were put at considerable risk by the reckless driving behavior, and many were only able to narrowly avoid collisions.
Chase with a dangerous end
At a crucial moment in Hadikgasse, the risky driver rammed a vehicle that had been blocked by the police. He drove directly towards one of the officers. In this threatening situation, a police officer had to fire several shots from his service weapon to protect himself and others. The officers finally managed to stop the fleeing car in Kaltenbäckgasse.
The driver allowed himself to be arrested without resistance. During a search of the vehicle, police discovered several bags of suspected cocaine and a blank pistol. A medical officer determined that the 18-year-old was under the influence of drugs. After the interrogation, he was released again on the orders of the Vienna public prosecutor.
Investigations and legal action
Evidence of self-defense was the reason for the police officer's use of firearms. According to a police spokesman, the investigation and complaints office was informed of possible allegations of mistreatment. An investigation is currently underway to determine how many shots were fired and the entire situation remains under investigation. Luckily no one was injured.
Meanwhile, the police are carrying out extensive investigations under the auspices of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office. This case raises important questions about pursuits and safety protocols that affect not only officers but also innocent road users.
