Ordination to the priesthood in Vienna-Leopoldstadt: Fr. Thomas Pham follows the order's tradition
On Saturday, November 23, 2024, Fr. Thomas Pham will be ordained a priest in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn will carry out the consecration in the Church of the Hospitaller Order on Taborstrasse. Fr. Thomas Pham, who is currently Prior of the Brothers of Mercy, has already taken significant steps in his time with the Order.
Consecration is a rarity in the Order of the Brothers of Mercy. This tradition goes back to the founder John of God, who founded a community in the 16th century dedicated to caring for the sick and needy. His innovative approaches, such as the introduction of separate rooms for patients and the written documentation of disease progression, are considered fundamental elements of the modern hospital system. John of God was canonized in 1690 and is revered as the patron saint of the sick and nursing professions.
CV of Ms. Thomas Pham
Fr. Thomas Pham was born in Vietnam in 1982 and came to Vienna in 2004, where he joined the Order of the Brothers of Mercy. His journey through the order first took him to Graz and in 2014 he made his final profession. As part of his training as a nurse, which he began after his profession, he gained valuable experience in the healthcare sector. Later, in 2019, he started studying theology to deepen his knowledge of the doctrine of the faith.
On April 27, 2024, he was ordained a deacon together with other candidates for ordination from the two Vienna seminaries. Since January 2023, Fr. Thomas has also taken on responsibility as provincial economist of the Austrian Order Province and brings his expertise to the management of the order.
The upcoming ordination is not only a personal milestone for Fr. Thomas, but also a continuation of the traditional mission of the Brothers of Mercy in Vienna and beyond. His role as Prior since April 2023 demonstrates his commitment and leadership within the Order.
