Drama in Schaffhausen: Austria's handball players are fighting against Switzerland
Austria's national handball team achieved an exciting draw in Schaffhausen on Sunday. After a competitive game against Switzerland, the game ended with 29:29, with the experienced player Janko Bozovic secured the decisive point for Austria in the dramatic final phase just three seconds before the end.
From the beginning, the match was difficult for the Austrian team, who met an unexpectedly strong opponent in this qualification game for the European Championship after a furious start in the previous week against Turkey (31:28). Switzerland demanded everything from the team, especially since Austria had to accept some residues, including a 0: 3 start and later a 4: 7 deficit, which they could not overcome until the 15th minute.
Drama until the end
However, the Austrian selection fought back into the game and delivered a gripping competition that remained exciting up to the last minute. Before the decision, it looked like a defeat because Austria left 26:28 two minutes before the end. But Bozovic proved great commitment and secured the draw with his late goal.
Tobias Wagner, who shone with eight goals as the best thrower for Austria, was frustrated about the missed opportunities in the first half despite the point win. "That shouldn't happen to us," he emphasized in the follow -up of the game.
Despite the only three points from the first two games - instead of the hoped -for four - team boss Ales Pajovic was satisfied overall. With the draw and victory against Turkey, the Austrian team is currently taking second place behind Germany in the table, which has four points, and in front of Switzerland with a point and Turkey without a meter.
The next big challenge is already around the corner: On January 14, 2025, the World Cup in Croatia, Denmark and Norway begins, and in March 2025 it will continue with a double game against Germany in the European Championship qualification.
