Urban Gardening: New vegetable beads for Viennese cemeteries open!

Wien, Österreich - On June 4, 2025, the cemeteries Vienna, in cooperation with "Ackerhelden", expanded their urban Gardening project and created new garden areas. Since March 2025, ten new vegetable beads have been prepared at the Neustift cemetery in the 18th district of Vienna. These beds offer an area of 24 m² each and are designed for the cultivation of organic fruit and vegetables. The new garden areas are open to free meadows that are not used as grave areas.

The start of the season is imminent, and the beds are handed over to users with pre-planted organic vegetable cultures. This is done as part of the "Together.Sorgam." Initiative. In spring 2023, many users already had the opportunity to manage vegetable beads in the Vienna central cemetery and the Südwest cemetery. This year, around 75% of former users have booked their beds for 2025 again.

services and booking options

Each of the new beds also offers extensive services in addition to the acreage. Users can choose between areas of 24 m² or 40 m². The expert "arable heroes" are ready to offer support for care and harvest. This includes helpful tips and available garden tools. The costs for the use of a bed are 149 euros per year and is aimed at people who have a grave on one of the 46 cemeteries of Friedhöfe Wien GmbH.

The booking is made via the free customer portal "Digital Grave", which has been part of every grave plant since 2020. Registration can be made online at www.digitalesgrab.at. The first-come-first servant principle applies as long as the capacities are enough. Users also have the option of setting up digital memory rooms and carrying out term extensions.

improved land use and environmental awareness

In view of the positive response to the previous offers, the Kürhöfe Vienna have opened up additional suitable areas. This is done not least to meet the growing demand for urban horticulture. The entire area of the cemeteries in Vienna accounts for about 1.2% of the city area, whereby Friedhöfe Wien GmbH is supervising over 550,000 graves.

The Urban Gardening project was not only successful in using the areas, but also beneficial for mourning and as a common hobby for those involved. People who are interested in growing vegetables will find access to nature and sustainable self -sufficiency.

Further information on the offers of the Urban Gardening can be obtained from the websites of Friedhöfe Vienna and ORF Vienna.
