U4 lock in Vienna: Large renovation project starts for 300 million!

The U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke in Vienna has been closed to autumn since June 28th. This measure is part of a comprehensive renovation project that affects the over 120 year old tunnel infrastructure. According to Kosmo , the work has already been necessary, since the U4 was based on a historic tram line that was built between 1898 and 1901.

The upcoming maintenance work includes tracks, tunnel carriers and soft. The investment framework for the "Neu4" project amounts to over 300 million euros. The renovation work includes comprehensive measures: the tracks, soft and tunnel blankets are expanded and renewed. In addition, the historical Otto Wagner stations, the renewal of signal boxes and turning systems as well as the re-installation of elevators and cable work takes place. In order not to disturb the traffic, many work takes place at night, but large renovation sections are connected to operational settings.

The lock currently separates the U4 in half, which means that replacement traffic is offered. This replacement traffic is provided by the tram lines E4, D and 71. The reasons for the blocking are the cramped space in the tunnel as well as the need for coordinated construction phases that require the implementation of the work.

The U4 is considered the most susceptible line within the Vienna transport network, which is due to its historical building fabric. The construction work in summer is ideal due to the lower number of users and parallel projects. The Viennese lines combine replacement tram lines, pendulum buses and additional trains for replacement traffic. After the summer, further platform renovations and track work are planned to further optimize the transport infrastructure.
