Trump and Selenskyj: Peace talks at the NATO summit in the Hague!

At the NATO summit in the Hague on June 25, 2025, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and US President Donald Trump met for a significant conversation. This was the first personal meeting of the two heads of state since April 2025 and lasted around 50 minutes. The war in Ukraine and the associated challenges were the focus of their discussions. According to [vienna.at] (https://www.vienna.at/trump-trtst-selenskyj-tin-aus- der-Dem-Schlamassel-Raus/9506834) Selenskyj expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the USA and confirmed his willingness to advance pressing peace talks.

During the meeting,

Trump emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to end the war and called the situation a "mess". He announced that he had recently been contacted by Putin who had offered help for working with Iran. Trump, on the other hand, found that his focus was on support for Ukraine and that he is now the possibility of providing additional rockets for the Patriot air defense system, which, however, are difficult to obtain because the USA also depends on these systems for Israel.

Development of defense strategies

Selenskyj and Trump also spoke about a possibly joint production of drones, which indicates the increased urgency of the Ukrainian defense efforts. The Ukrainian President confirmed his support for American arms manufacturers, while Trump also expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress of the ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. This dynamic is critically persecuted by international observers, especially since Trump seems to be talking about Ukraine at the summit, as political scientist Klemens Fischer noted, reports n-tv.

The security situation in Europe remains tense and is influenced by the conflict in Ukraine and the relationship with Russia. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte informed that the United States gradually wants to go back to NATO operations, which has more responsibility for European partners. This is particularly important in view of possible political changes within the United States. NATO also plans to invest five percent of the gross domestic product of its member states in defense by 2035, which underlines the relevance of the discussions at the summit.

NATO and Ukraine in the security debate

An important element of the NATO strategy is the support of Ukraine through military aid with a total value of at least 40 billion euros, which will be provided in the coming year. Germany has already promised eight billion euros. Support services also include F-16-Kampfjets from Denmark and the Netherlands as well as additional patriot systems, as stated in the report by Tagesschau. In view of the developing military and political landscape in Europe, NATO remains vigilant with the aggressive tactics of Russia, even if they are associated with high losses. The possibility of Ukraine's NATO accession is considered "irreversible", but a formal invitation depends on the consent of all Allies. With all these discussions, the endeavor to a real peace process and the protection of the civilian population in Ukraine is of central importance.
