Trump attacks Selenskyj: Does he extend the Ukraine war?

US President Donald Trump has once again practiced sharp criticism of his Ukrainian counterpart Wolodymyr Selenskyj. In a contribution on his Truth Social platform, Trump accuses Trump Selenskyj not to accept the Russian occupation of the Crimea and thereby unnecessarily extend the war in Ukraine. Trump asks why Ukraine did not fight for the Crimea eleven years ago when it was handed over to Russia without resistance. In his opinion, Selenskyj's attitude harms the peace negotiations with Russia.

Selenskyj has vehemently spoken out against regional detections to Russia and emphasizes that this falls outside the Ukrainian constitution. He sees no reason for negotiations about the Crimea, which was annexed by Russia. This situation leads to tensions, especially before an important meeting in London, where the peace negotiations will also be in focus.

The perspective of the USA and diplomacy

Trump also criticized the fact that US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio had canceled his participation in the London summit. This dampens the expectations of progress between the parties to the conflict. The summit only took place at the advisory level, without the foreign ministers of the states involved. However, Trump's Vice President JD Vance demands that both sides are willing to give up part of the controlled territory in order to make progress. He reports on a "clear proposal" for peace negotiations and calls for a decision on both sides.

At the same time, US specialist Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow in the coming days to speak to President Putin about the end of the combative arguments. Vances Optimism with regard to a diplomatic solution is in the context of the continued criticism of Selenskyj's position, which is seen as an obstacle to the peace process.

The current state of peace negotiations

After more than two years of war in Ukraine, there is no agreement in the peace negotiations. Chancellor Olaf Scholz penetrates a rapid peace, while both parties to the conflict are blaming each other's fault of the stagnant situation. Vladimir Putin claims that Selenskyj has issued a "ban on negotiation", but this is classified as wrong by a fact check. A Ukrainian law that prohibits negotiations with Russia does not exist, but there is a decree (No. 679/2022) that determines the impossibility of negotiations with Putin.

Selenskyj explicitly demands pressure on Russia to advance the negotiations. The situation is also complicated by the claim of the Russian Foreign Minister Lawrow that the West has no interest in peace talks. This is also considered wrong because the West actively supports Ukraine and could possibly appear as an intermediary. Experts argue that successful negotiations are only possible if both sides recognize that military means are no longer effective.

The current developments illustrate the complex location in the Ukraine conflict and the difficulties that must be overcome for a sustainable solution. The pressure on diplomacy will continue to grow, while different views of territorial questions and negotiation conditions still exist.
