Fatal surf accident: Eisbach wave remains closed until further notice!
After a tragic accident, the Eisbach wave in Munich remains closed to surfers until further notice. A fatal incident occurred in April of this year when a 33-year-old surf with her security lines got stuck on an obstacle in the water. Despite immediate rescue measures, she later died in the hospital. The incident not only alerted the city administration of the state capital, but also mobilized the surf community for more security at the popular surf spot. Kleine Zeitung reports of the serious consequences of the accident that led to the temporary closure of the wave.
The city of Munich has then issued a general order that prohibits surfing and bathing in the area of the Eisbach wave until further notice. This is done in the effort to prevent further accidents. In the event of violations of this ban, a fine of up to 50,000 euros threatens. As tz.de , access to the wave is also more difficult. Nevertheless, there are reports that at least one surfer is surfed on the wave despite the ban.
Investigations and safety precautions
The Munich public prosecutor is currently investigating in this case and is examining all circumstances of the accident. The city ensures that the surfing ban is checked every day. Investigators have also examined the water in the Eisbach pool in order to identify possible obstacles. So far, smaller metallic objects have been fished out of the water, the connection to the accident has to be examined even more precisely. The decision on the reopening of the wave is ultimately at the city of Munich, which, however, takes the feedback from the surf community seriously.
The accident was the first serious incident in the Eisbach wave for years, which has been a popular surf spot since the 1980s. The second chairman of the Surfen Interest Group in Munich, Moritz von Sivers, announced that it would make suggestions for additional security measures. Among other things, more rescue equipment such as throwing bags could be provided. Schwäbische.de also reports that warning signs could be installed on the dangerousness of the safety lines at the surf spot.
The city of Munich has thus taken responsibility to ensure both the security of the surfers and to restore the joy of surfing on the Eisbach wave. Until a complete analysis of the cause of the accident has been completed, the wave will continue to exist.
