Poverty study in Tyrol: How the Corona crisis affects disadvantaged groups
The crises around the globe are also leaving their mark in Austria, as the new study by researchers at the University of Innsbruck shows. The report highlights the “affect of poverty in the crisis” and deals with the dramatic effects of the Covid pandemic on the realities of life of people in Tyrol. In particular, economic conditions have deteriorated sharply, leading to an increase in poverty. Over 1.3 million people in Austria are affected, and the increase in the cost of living highlights the pressing challenges that many families have to overcome, as the Stubai-Wipptal district newspaper notes in its report on the current developments of SC Gries.
Study results and direct need for action
The study, which was carried out as part of the Tyrolean Poverty Research Forum, identifies particularly vulnerable groups such as people with educational deficiencies and single parents. According to the researchers, the pandemic acts like a “magnifying glass” that exacerbates existing problems. This is particularly evident in the social circumstances of those affected, whose participation is severely limited. “Interviews with families affected by poverty documented serious experiences of exclusion, which primarily affect children and women,” explains study leader Andreas Exenberger.
At the same time, the BILLA fundraising campaign “A donation that fills you up” starts in order to specifically combat poverty. The funds will go towards providing food and hygiene products to severely affected families. This clearly shows how quick help must be provided in an emergency in order to meet the acute needs of people who have been severely affected by the outbreak of the pandemic, the Stubai-Wipptal district newspaper reports. Gabriele Fischer, the State Councilor for Social Affairs, emphasizes that the issue of poverty must not be pushed into the background and states: “Social policy means improving and securing the lives of those affected.”
These approaches are necessary in order to react quickly to the increasing poverty situation and to ensure broader support for all those affected, not only in Tyrol, but throughout the country.
