Attention, winter sports fans! Avalanche warnings now available daily for Carinthia

On November 24, 2025, the Carinthia avalanche warning service officially begins the winter season. State Councilor Daniel Fellner emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility in disaster protection. He appeals to the population to find out about current avalanche warnings in good time and to take them seriously. The recommendation for alpine activities includes the use of appropriate equipment and familiarity with emergency numbers.

The avalanche warning service publishes a report every day at 5:00 p.m. that contains information on danger levels, danger spots and avalanche problems. “Avalanche events pose special challenges for emergency services,” continued Fellner. A weekly review also analyzes weather conditions, the snow cover, the progression of the danger levels and avalanche accidents that have already occurred.

Current services and technologies

The measuring station network in Carinthia is continuously maintained and the expertise is available to both avalanche commissions and winter sports enthusiasts. The new winter season means that the avalanche report is now available in seven languages, which was made possible through cooperation with the state of Tyrol. This automated translation is based on standardized text modules and ensures that information is accessible to a wider audience.

The avalanche warning service's interactive online platform offers a variety of information, including the daily avalanche report, weather data and relevant snow cover content. Further information is available on the Avalanche Warning Service website: lawinenwarndienst.ktn.gv.at.

The Austrian Board of Trustees for Alpine Safety (ÖKAS) also has an important role in improving Alpine safety. It is dedicated to research, prevention and communication on Alpine accidents. ÖKAS organizes the Alpine Fair and the Alpine Forum, an important platform for the exchange about safety in mountain sports. The next event will take place on November 22, 2025 as part of the Alpine Fair in Innsbruck. Here, international speakers will present new findings on the topic of safety in mountain sports, such as alpinesicherheit.at.

These initiatives will further promote safety in the Alpine region and it is expected that the population will be better protected through the information provided.
