Stögmüller demands equality: LGBTIQ+protection must come now!

Österreich - In 2025, the situation of the LGBTIQ+community remains tense in Austria and worldwide. On June 3, 2025, David Stögmüller, LGBTIQ+spokesman for the Greens, expressed that the allocation of important LGBTIQ+initiatives in the equal treatment committee was not acceptable, especially in Pride Month. According to Stögmüller, this delay is bitter and urgently needs to be overcome in order to actively promote the equality of LGBTIQ+personnel. He is particularly worried about the postponed applications to protect against hate crimes against LGBTIQ+person.

Stögmüller points to the alarming numbers: In Austria, every third LGBTIQ+man has already been confronted with conversion attempts. These practices, which are considered pseudo -scientific, aim to change people's sexual orientation or gender identity. The methods range from psychotherapeutic and medical approaches to extreme religious practices, which are often associated with violence and abuse. A.O., a person from Nigeria, had extreme violence in the context of conversion therapy at the age of 13 and describes their experiences as traumatic and life -changing.

a necessary ban on conversion therapy

Stögmüller emphasizes that the practice of conversion therapy is a clear threat to human rights and calls for a complete ban - without loopholes. The National Council had unanimously demanded a ban in the past, but the implementation is pending. These delays are unacceptable to him, especially since the European Union has been discussing an anti-discrimination directive for years to offer comprehensive protection for LGBTIQ+person. Austria has to act as a pioneer instead of lagging behind.

Practices such as conversion therapies are still widespread in many countries, often legitimized by social and religious conventions. According to a report by the United Nations Human Rights Council, it is crucial to end these practices.

the need for equality and acceptance

Apart from the legal aspects, acceptance in society is essential to ensure the rights of LGBTIQ+personnel. In order to really achieve equality, not only laws have to be adopted, but also social norms have to be changed. The basic human rights of this community include, as was explained on the platform Our World in Data, the right to physical integrity, social rights such as marriage and adoption rights, as well as economic and political rights.

In view of the challenges that LGBTIQ+persons face worldwide, it is crucial that states, organizations and individuals take responsibility to improve the situation. Stögmüller appeals to a cross -party cooperation and the urgent implementation of necessary measures, especially in the current period of Pride Month. Support offers for those affected are also important, such as the initiative "Enough is Enough", which provides advice centers and assistance.
