AT-Alert test successful: Only 22 sirens failed in Styria!

Last weekend, 22 sirens in Styria were identified as faulty due to an annual test alarm. However, this small defect was made up for by the new mobile phone warning system “AT-Alert”, which achieved impressive performance in a test. The established “Katwarn” system will be discontinued in favor of AT-Alert.

AT-Alert was tested for the first time to warn the population in the event of a crisis. A message appeared on cell phones, accompanied by an audible alarm. Harald Eitner, head of the Styria disaster control department, confirmed positive feedback from 1,900 mountain rescuers. In fact, over 99 percent of recipients received the alert.

The new system proved its worth during the severe weather events in mid-September, when 15 warnings were sent to the affected federal states of Styria, Burgenland and Lower Austria. With the smooth operation of AT-Alert, the old Katwarn system will be discontinued.

In the future, cell phone warnings will be an integral part of the alarm system, with the possibility of specifically alerting specific regions and informing people in danger. Günther Hohenberger, head of the Styrian state warning center, emphasized that the system can be used in various emergencies such as pollutant clouds or natural disasters.

These successful test results show that Styria is well prepared for future crisis situations and that the safety of its citizens is a top priority. More information on this topic can be found at regionaljournal.at.
