Sofia Goggia celebrates comeback with best time in downhill training!
In Beaver Creek, Italian ski racer Sofia Goggia impressively delivered the best run in the final test run for the start of the women's downhill World Cup after being sidelined for eight months due to an injury. This was reported by the crown. In the third training session on the demanding “Birds of Prey” course, Goggia showed that she was back in top form and left the competition behind her: Americans Lauren Macuga and Breezy Johnson followed in second and third place, while Goggia gave them a time of over one second. Ricarda Haaser was the best Austrian in fifth place (+1.32 seconds), followed by Stephanie Venier in seventh place (+1.37 seconds).
In the second training session it was the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami who presented the best run, driven by her will to win after an injury. So also reported laola1 that Gut-Behrami was well ahead of other athletes and relegated the downhill World Cup defending champion Cornelia Hütter to sixth place with a gap of 1.27 seconds. The challenging slope demanded a lot from the athletes, and to the surprise of many, some ended up behind the best places due to gate errors.
Important comebacks in Beaver Creek
Nina Ortlieb, who is also competing after a long injury break, had to build up the necessary confidence on the way to her return, but intervened in the action with two errors on goal. Tamara Tippler skipped training out of caution in order to best prepare for the World Cup, while Lena Wechner was unable to compete due to a bruise. The comeback of the stars and the high intensity of competition make the event an exciting highlight of the Alpine ski season.
