Scandal at the World Ski Championships: Taxi driver injured, job and license lost!

A threatening incident at the Alpine Ski World Championships in Hinterglemm has now caught up with the courts. On February 9, 2023, an argument broke out between a drunk World Cup visitor and a professional driver, which brought both men to the Salzburg regional court. The incident occurred as part of the international ski events that took place from February 6th to 19th in Courchevel and Méribel, France, as Wikimedia reported.

The accused from Tyrol, 38 years old, was charged with criminal damage. The focus of the prosecution is a side window damaged by the 53-year-old Turkish driver's aggressive handling of the taxi. The taxi driver, on the other hand, faces assault charges. Both men pleaded not guilty in court. The incident started when the taxi driver honked because he couldn't move on. In a heated moment, the Tyrolean jumped onto the hood of the taxi and held on to the windshield wipers during a journey of about 150 meters.

Incident and consequences

The Tyrolean reported a meniscus injury and expressed fear of getting under the wheels. The taxi driver describes him as aggressive and states that the Tyrolean poured beer into the car and threw a glass, which resulted in an injury. The consequences for the professional driver were serious: he lost his job, his driver's license and his taxi license as a result of the incident. The verdict against the 53-year-old, who was sentenced to eight months of conditional imprisonment, is not yet final crown reported.

The incident casts a negative light on the sporting event, which was originally intended as a celebration of skiing. The 47th Alpine World Ski Championships were originally awarded during the 51st FIS Congress in 2018. Courchevel beat Saalbach-Hinterglemm, a location that had previously been part of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, by a vote of 9-6.

World Cup in focus

The World Ski Championships included disciplines such as Alpine Combined, Super-G, Downhill and Slalom, with all competitions taking place as scheduled. The men and women fought dramatically for the medals. Standout performances include the alpine combination, which Marco Odermatt of Switzerland took on February 6th, followed by Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Cameron Alexander. Athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin and Federica Brignone, who also won medals, shone in the various disciplines.

The developments surrounding the incident in Hinterglemm and the impressive competitions at the World Championships in Courchevel and Méribel show that the ski events can bring both sporting highs and unexpected lows, such as salzburg.orf.at mentioned.
