Security in Austria: An analysis of surveys and comments on the perception of safe living conditions and local commitment.
Security or fear? What Austrians really feel!
In Austria there is a heated debate about the population's sense of security. Although the statistics show a high security rating, Sebastian Bohrn Mena says in his comment on oe24 that these surveys contradict the statements of some right-wing politicians who speak of a dangerous situation: “In what world of fear are these people actually trapped?” he asks provocatively. According to a 2023 Interior Ministry study, 91 percent of the population feel safe where they live and 84 percent feel the country as a whole is safe. Nevertheless, it seems as if constant fear and distorted perception dominate social discussion.
Strengthen youth engagement
When it comes to social issues, it becomes clear that young people are striving for change in their immediate environment. A survey by the Bertelsmann Foundation shows that the majority of respondents believe they can achieve more locally than at the national level. Regina von Görtz emphasizes that it is important to take young people seriously and offer them suitable opportunities for participation. “We need tailor-made and low-threshold participation opportunities for young people in their environment,” she demands and emphasizes the role of local politicians who should seek dialogue with young people. A change in mentality is crucial here: “Alibi participation doesn’t help anyone,” says von Görtz.
Through serious involvement, young people can experience the effectiveness of their engagement, which ultimately strengthens democracy. Creating structures such as youth advisory councils could help ensure that their voices are heard in local decision-making processes. Topics such as fiber optic expansion or the design of leisure facilities could be addressed, which not only improves the feeling of security but also promotes a sense of belonging in community life. The connection between subjective feelings of security and active social engagement is essential for the future of Austria, as the reports from oe24 and the Bertelsmann Foundation make clear.
