Security on the train: FPÖ warns of dramatic foreign crime!

On May 28, 2025, Christian Hafenecker, traffic spokesman for the FPÖ, commented on the security in public transport. According to current figures from a parliamentary request, almost 186,000 crimes in trains and at train stations have been registered in the past ten years. These statistics prove an alarming average number of 51 crimes per day, which include 33 murders, 111 rapes and almost 90,000 thefts. Hafeneck describes the situation as a decline in security in the country and criticizes the failure of the system parties, which in his opinion failed in relation to immigration and security. In particular, he calls for an immediate stop of the illegal immigration and the immediate deportation of criminal illegal immigrants.

The number of non-German suspects in these statistics is significant. Hafenecker reports of around 17,500 suspects, including people from Afghanistan, Syria and Nigeria. He emphasizes the role of politics, which makes private transport and urges citizens to switch to public transport, while security does not seem to guarantee.

violent offenses and their backgrounds

Supplementary data of the Bundestag bundesag.de show that a total of 27,160 violent offenses were registered in connection with train stations and trains in 2023. This also includes 2,262 sex offenses and 58,532 property offenses. Some of the suspects had German citizenship, while a large part could be identified with non-German citizenship. In particular, the figures for the ownership offenses in which 15,865 non-German suspects were recorded.

The debate about foreign crime is not new. As reported by the Federal Center for Political Education [bpb.de] (https://www.bpb.de/themen/inne-sicherheit/dossier-inereicherheit/301624/migration-und-kriminalitaet- experiences-und-neuere-decklungen/), a small part of the migrants have been overrepresented in crime statistics. This is often due to social and demographic factors, such as the age and gender composition as well as stressful living conditions. It is emphasized that adult migrants with access to the labor market are usually not punishable.

The influence of integration programs

The discussion about integration options is of great importance, since educational institutions play a key role for the integration of children from immigrant families. It is emphasized that differences in crime participation can also be decisively influenced by access to integration programs and labor markets. While crime is declining among young people from migrant families as a whole, it can be seen that conflicts, especially in shared accommodation, can lead to increased violent crimes.

In summary, it should be noted that the security situation in public transport is a complex challenge that is influenced by political decisions and social factors. Hafenecker warns of a possible state failure if citizens feel unsafe in public space and demands effective measures to improve security.
