Putin is playing for time: Trump's peace plans for Ukraine are failing!

Donald Trump recently announced that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine. However, this assessment comes at a time when Trump's previous peace efforts are seen as unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is showing little cooperation and continues to play for time in the conflict. According to Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidential office, it is crucial for Russia to win the conflict. He called Putin's military decisions "absolutely right" and emphasized Russia's duty to be victorious. Despite the tense situation, Russia is grateful for the US peace efforts and is ready for direct consultations with Ukraine. However, Kyiv has not yet responded to the offers.

Putin is open to peace and is working intensively with the USA. Nevertheless, Peskov said that the complexity of the conflict made rapid progress difficult. Moscow insists on recognizing the four annexed Ukrainian regions, which further hinders the peace process. Experts increasingly doubt that Putin has serious intentions for peace. They warn that the situation is critical and the path to lasting peace could be a long one.

Russian military presence

In a further step, Putin signed a decree ordering the deployment of troops to eastern Ukraine to ensure “peace” in the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics. These troops were sent by Russia to the conflict region after Putin recognized the areas controlled by pro-Russian separatists as independent states. The decision to deploy was sharply criticized internationally.

The US has strongly attacked Russia in the UN Security Council and described the troops deployed as not peacekeepers. UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo regretted Putin's order for the deployment and warned that the next hours and days will be crucial. The threat of a major conflict is real, which has sparked international concern.

International reactions

Albanian UN Ambassador Ferit Hoxha raised concerns and asked who might be next, while Indian Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti urged restraint. British Ambassador Barbara Woodward called on Russia to back down, while Brazil called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.

Overall, the situation in Ukraine remains tense and the prospects of a quick solution are more than questionable. As Trump tries to bring about peace, there is resistance on many fronts - both political and military. It remains to be seen whether a real dialogue with Moscow is actually possible.
