Polcanova and Gardos: Austria's table tennis dreams burst in Doha!
Doha, Katar - The table tennis world championship 2025 in Doha, Qatar, was mixed for the Austrian players. Sofia Polcanova, set to number twelve, left after an intensive game against the Romanian player Andreea Dragoman (WR No. 127). Polcanova started strongly and won the first set 11: 5. But the joy only lasted briefly, because Dragoman turned the match and secured the next three sentences in a row with 9:11, 11:13 and the decisive set after a 8: 8 with a run of three points. After 53 minutes the game ended and Polcanova said disappointed by emphasizing that she hadn't played well and earned Dragoman. With this, she left the World Cup early on, as well as in the past two world championships, where she had also lost in the first round.
In the individual competition, only Daniel Habesohn for Austria remains in the race. He will compete against the Taiwanese player Lin Yun-Ju on Wednesday. Polcanova and her teammate Robert Gardos also had to give up in the men's doubles. They lost 0: 3 against the highly favorite Chinese Kuai Man and Lin Shidong and ended the tournament in ninth place.
successful opening fights
The result in the mixed competition was particularly gratifying, where Gardos and Polcanova were also victorious. They clearly defeated the Serbian pairing Levajac/Lupulesku 3-0. Gardos also celebrated a victory against the Belgian Allegro and Racial Fosses in the men's doubles. These first successes gave hope for a good tournament, but the following rounds turned out to be challenging.
a waiting for the next round
The last hopes for Polcanova are now in doubles, where she will compete with her Romanian partner Bernadette Szöcs. On Wednesday there is an important match against the Czech pairing Hana Matelova and Barbora Balazova, against which she had lost in the European Championship final last year. The coming days will be decisive for the further course of the tournament.
Overall, it can be seen that the World Table Tennis Championship had both challenges and successes for the Austrian players. While lone fighter like Habesohn are still in the tournament, everyone hopes for a better performance in the coming games to improve the balance for Austria.
