Parliament debates triple pack: budget, pension system and equality!

In the week from June 2 to 6, 2025, the Austrian Parliament faces important decisions. Central topics are the double budget 2025/2026 and the budget accompanying law, which includes 72 amendments to the law. On June 3, 2025, an expert hearing will take place in the budget committee, in which relevant votes are one of the upcoming financial issues. This hearing is broadcast live in the media library and is part of a comprehensive series of events that also include discussions in the equal treatment committee and an expert forum of the Federal Council on the pension system. Last days had already met with further specialist committees of the National Council in parallel to discuss specific topics. The first consultations on the budget subdivisions take place on June 4; These include the budgets of various ministries and the subdivision of the parliamentary budget.

In preparation for parliamentary consultations, political actors have also clearly expressed their positions. The SPÖ calls for a fair participation of companies with high profits to renovate budgets. This includes measures such as the closure of tax gaps as well as the adaptation of individual taxes and levies. An annual contribution of one billion euros from wealthy companies is sought. Among other things, the proposed measures include an expansion of the bank tax by 350 million euros, which appears necessary due to the high income of the banks. Further measures for the increase in income are under the increased taxation of gaming companies, an increase in the top tax rate and special surcharges for profits from red and devoted sales.

focus on social justice

The Austrian Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) reacted positively to the work program of the new government, which focuses on economic stimulus packages for creating jobs. A sign of social justice is the planned agreement on asset -related taxes. This includes the extension of the top tax rate of 55 % for income over one million euros by four years, which turns out to be an important element in the discussion about budget consolidation. The burdens of the energy industry and the banks in the sense of a fair load distribution were also emphasized by ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian.

Planning to combat inflation include the introduction of a rental price brake and a social tariff for affected households. In addition, a strategy for securing skilled workers in healthcare is presented, while measures for quality offensive in elementary pedagogy can also become more important. These points are part of a comprehensive package, which also includes strengthening social health insurance and the development of an "energy crisis mechanism".

The week in parliament not only promises a lot of politics, but also the attempt to make further social and economic structures in Austria sustainable. The consultations on the budget subdivisions will continue on June 10th and show how important a transparent and fair budget policy is for the future of the country.
