Municipality of Helfenberg: Looking for a new grocery store

In Helfenberg, local supplies are once again in jeopardy. After the recent bankruptcy of Michael Kurz, the operator of the local Spar market, a successor is urgently sought. The situation is particularly difficult for the community, as it had to go without a grocery store for seven months in 2019. Currently, a liquidator continues to operate the market, although the market could be closed at any time, depending on the administrator's decisions. Anna-Sophie Jetschgo, spokesperson for Spar, emphasizes that they are doing everything they can to find a new operator.

Mayor Josef Hintenberger says that local supplies are a central element of a community's infrastructure and that the current situation brings back many memories of past challenges. “It affects us all very much, even if it is not directly our responsibility,” explains Hintenberger. He added that although the village has an excellent inn and bakery, these facilities are unable to fill the gap left by a lack of local amenities.

Importance of social contacts

The challenges of local supply are not limited to the supply of food. For many local people, the social contacts that arise while shopping – chance encounters and conversations – are of great importance. Hintenberger emphasizes that these interactions are particularly valuable for less mobile citizens. “In my opinion, these social contacts are even more important and should not be underestimated,” he says.

The community intends to get actively involved in getting local supplies back up and running. However, Mayor Hintenberger is aware that this represents a major challenge. “It won’t be easy, but we will do our best to ensure that the citizens of Helfenberg have a reliable supply,” he added. These developments not only represent a logistical challenge, but also a significant emotional impact on the village community.

The future of the Spar market in Helfenberg remains uncertain, but the community recognizes the urgency of the problem and is striving to find a solution together with the Spar headquarters so as not to disappoint the remaining local population again.
