Traffic jam alert for the holiday weekend: You must avoid these streets!
On today's holiday, May 27, 2025, the whole of Austria is facing a challenge: increased traffic volumes and numerous road closures are affecting mobility in cities and on the highways. The public holiday on Thursday attracts many travelers who want to use the days off for short vacations and excursions. This situation is further exacerbated by several major events.
The following roads are particularly affected:
- Westautobahn (A1)
- Ostautobahn (A4)
- Südosttangente (A23)
A serious construction site on the A23 in the Prater junction area is causing longer delays, while construction work on the Tauernautobahn (A10) between Golling andwerfen is also leading to traffic jams. In addition, significant backlogs are to be expected on the Fernpass road (B179).
Major events and their effects
Several significant events will take place over the long weekend. The Red Bull Erzbergrodeo is expected to attract many visitors to Eisenerz between May 29th and June 1st. This high number of visitors will put a significant strain on the local traffic situation.
In addition, the Upper Austria cycling tour, which takes place from Thursday to Sunday, leads to further closures. On Thursday the main square and adjacent streets in Linz will be affected, while on Friday a stage from Eferding to Ried im Innkreis will severely impact the federal highways B130, B141 and B143. Further cycling events with closures will follow on Saturday and Sunday, affecting the routes between Bad Schallerbach and Aigen-Schlägl and from St. Florian/Asten to Hutterer Höss.
Another event that can cause delays is this Daffodil Festival in the Salzkammergut, which is celebrated from May 29th to June 1st. The center of Bad Aussee will be closed several times during this time, and new one-way regulations are expected in the surrounding area.
Danger of traffic jams on motorways and federal highways
The high volume of travel not only brings cities to a standstill, but significant traffic jams can also be expected on the highways. According to the assessment, the situation is becoming particularly critical ÖAMTC including on the following routes:
- A1: Knoten Linz – Enns
- A4: Knoten Schwechat – Fischamend
- A10: Tunnelbaustelle Golling – Werfen
- B179: Einzugsgebiet im gesamten Verlauf
- B145/B320: Region des Narzissenfestes
Road users are urged to prepare for longer journey times and to choose alternative routes if necessary. The series of events in combination with holiday travel has the potential to make the initial situation considerably more difficult. Further information about the current traffic situation is available on the ÖAMTC website.
