Crisis-proof communities: 19 places in Lower Austria set standards for protection
In view of the recent flood events in September, it became clear once again how important civil and disaster protection is for our communities. In this context, a ceremonial ceremony took place in the Tulln fire and safety center at which 19 communities were recognized as “crisis-proof communities”. This award is a strong sign that the affected communities are well prepared for emergencies.
To earn these certificates, communities had to take a challenging path. This includes the development of a comprehensive crisis and disaster plan as well as regular training for community employees. In addition, numerous exercises were carried out to prepare the population for various emergency scenarios.
Why this award is important
When handing over the certificates, Deputy Governor Stephan Pernkopf emphasized the role of mayors as effective disaster managers. "Especially in the event of natural disasters or infrastructural damage, they are often the first to act. Their preparation can be crucial in limiting damage and saving lives," explained Pernkopf. This statement highlights the need for a well-organized community that can respond quickly and efficiently to crises.
Christoph Kainz, President of the Lower Austrian Civil Protection Association, complemented these thoughts by praising the exemplary character of the award-winning communities. “With the ‘Crisis-Proof Community’ certificate, we are setting a visible example of lived responsibility,” says Kainz. Such awards motivate all organizations involved and set an example for other communities of how a safe living space can be created.
State Councilor Christoph Luisser emphasized the importance of prevention in times of crisis. "The winning communities show that through careful planning and commitment, the risk of damage can be drastically minimized. They are living proof that preventive measures can save lives," added Luisser.
The path to certification
To achieve “crisis-proof community” status, communities must meet certain criteria, broken down into a star system. The degree to which these safety standards are met is rated in “stars”, with up to five stars possible. One star symbolizes compliance with the basic requirements, while five stars are awarded for comprehensive crisis security. This transparent evaluation system is intended to continuously motivate communities to improve.
The following communities were the first in Lower Austria to be declared “crisis-proof communities”:
