Fit again: high speed after repairs from today!

Tullnerfeld, Österreich - The western railway line between Vienna and St. Pölten, one of the main traffic arteries in the Austrian rail network, is facing a crucial turning point after extensive flood damage. After the hundred -year flood last autumn, ÖBB had to impose a three -month lock of the new western route in autumn 2024. From May 12, 2025, the tracks will be closed again for three and a half weeks to complete final repair work. This lock is expected to continue until June 5, 2025, and extensive measures are used to increase flood protection. Judith Engel, head of infrastructure, estimates the total damage at just under 100 million euros.

In the course of the maintenance work, provisional solutions are dismantled in the Atzenbrugger tunnel and replaced by new components. Mobile flood protection is also installed. In the Lainz tunnel, sealing work on cable enclosures and the renewal of security systems are carried out. Over 1,000 distribution boxes are also moved to higher positions to protect them from future floods. At the Tullnerfeld train station, the house technology, including electrical, heating and ventilation, is placed higher to protect against flooding, and the platforms are extended to about 420 meters to offer space for longer sets. These extensive renovation measures will further restrict driving during the lock.

effects on rail traffic

The closures lead to significant restrictions in long-distance and local transport. Passengers have to expect an additional travel time of around 30 minutes, since long -distance traffic is redirected via the old west route. The stop at Tullnerfeld train station is no longer necessary.

  • timetable changes and train failures concern the lines S80, S50, CJX5, REX50, REX51, R40, S40 and S4.
  • Replacement traffic on buses is set up and marked by a coloring system:
    • Blue line: Sev between Vienna Hütteldorf and Eichgraben-Altlengbach/Neulengbach.
    • Green line: Direct buses Vienna Hütteldorf - Tullnerfeld.
    • red line: Sev Tulln a. d. Donau - Tullnerfeld - St. Pölten Hbf.
    • yellow line: SEV for line S40 by Tulln a. d. Danube to St. Pölten Hbf.
  • The ÖBB tickets are also recognized in Viennese lines (U4, U6, U3).

Despite the challenges caused by the construction work, the ÖBB strives to maintain a reliable range of mobility. The railjets of the western route continue to drive directly via Vienna Central Station to Vienna Airport. The first trains after the lock are expected on June 5; Among other things, the RJ821 from Wels will arrive in Vienna Hauptbahnhof at 5.35 a.m.

Future view

The measures will not only increase security, but also improve the efficiency and capacity of rail traffic. After the repair measures are completed, trains can drive again at top speed of 230 km/h, which brings with it a noticeable improvement for travelers. These comprehensive revaluation are part of the continuous efforts of the ÖBB to modernize and make the rail network in Austria.
