Cooking workshop for human rights: help young people prepare the burrito!

In the Mödling district, an inspiring cooking workshop took place in the Hauscafe youth center, in which young people prepared burritos together. The event was accompanied by Tina Wirnsberger by Fian, an organization that is committed to food for human rights. The aim of the workshop was to bring the young people closer to the decisive relationships between climate protection, human rights and nutrition. The event was received very positively, and the local youth councilor Stephan Schimanowa was pleased with the relaxed atmosphere and the dinner together, which the young people really enjoyed.

hunger as a serious human rights topic

The current situation regarding hunger worldwide is alarming. According to the United Nations estimates, 735 million people are acutely affected by hunger, although no one would have to go hungry because food production would be sufficient. This was emphasized in an interview by Sarah Luisa Brand, an expert on food. The main causes of hunger lie in social disadvantage, poverty and the devastating consequences of conflicts and climate change. Armed clashes, as currently in Ukraine and Gaza, often lead to the destruction of the livelihoods and the infrastructure.

The human right to food is anchored in Article 11 of the International Pact on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Brand explains that this means that every person must have access to appropriate, available and affordable food. The current challenges are great: the Covid 19 pandemic has tightened the situation, and climate change also exacerbates the problems in food supply. There is a lot to do to make the agricultural and nutritional systems more sustainable worldwide and ensure that nobody has to starve, as well as Institute for Human Rights
